Do you ever wonder why people do evil things or what the circumstances are that can affect this cruel behavior? Many people believe that this is because it is in our human nature to be cruel to others while others might believe that mental illness is the force behind these seemingly cruel acts. There are three different categories that derive from “Evil” and “Mentally ill” people. Individuals with psychological illnesses are in reality much more prone to be casualties as opposed to culprits of violence, those who are just plain evil are the ones who commit cruel acts towards others, when the two conditions collide it is a recipe for disaster. Most of us can say that we have been in a group where there is no clear leader or authority to set up rules and structure. When there is no leadership structure, groups tend to break down to the point where no one feels as if they are responsible to take on the specific task. In “the Unlikely Event of a Water Landing: Darley and Latane’s Training Manual—A Five Stage Approach” by Lauren Slater, Catherine Genovese, commonly known as “Kitty” was coming home on the night of March 13th (Friday the thirteenth) in the year of 1964 from her late night shift at the bar where she worked as a manager. She pulled into her car space and stepped out at 3 am making her way towards the call box till she was stopped by a man named Winston Moseley, there she was stabbed screaming out the words “Oh my god! He stabbed me! Please Help me!!”. After she said this, lights flickered on in majority of the windows of the crowded urban neighborhood while the crime went on over a thirty-five minute period, 3:15-3:50 am. There were thirty-eight witnesses in all and not one of them called the police and by then she was dead. How can this possibly happen? How can thirty-eight witnesses offer no assistance to this cruelty? John Darley of New York University and Bibb Latane of Columbia university read these letters and wondered the same thing.
