A Raisin in the Sun is a play written by Lorraine Hansberry that debuted March 11, 1959. The play is written about a family that is living in Chicago in the midst of predudism and are barely holding on. From start to finish we see the characters change not by choice but because they realized they had to. The genre of the play is definitely a tragedy that ends with a turn of events to create a happy ending. The tone of the play is not consistent for the most part. As for the cultural context the characters social, economic, and political status matter immensely in the way that the family lives. We see that throughout the play the characters suffer from money issues, the lost of a loved one, and then they are struck with predudism. The Youngers are a larger family that have been suffering from money issue their entire lives. When Mama Younger and her late husband fist moved into their current apartment they planned to only be there for a short period of time. Mamas dream was to move into a beautiful house that has a yard for her children to play in, but like most her dreams were heavily delayed by money problems and a growing family. As soon as the play begins we are told that her husband has passed away, but do to his hard work his family has been given an insurance check. At this point many including myself thought the tone of the play would become substantially happier, but with the acts done by her son the tone of the play fell to a very sad one. I believe that without the poor choices Walter made the play wouldn 't have changed because by doing this he made himself realize that no matter what happens family comes first event if that means loosing some of him pride. When Walter took action with turning Mr. Linder away the play drastically changed, not just the tone, but the genre. With these turn of events Walter is able to help his family and mother have the happy ending they all
