2) Participant observation has both its pros and cons. Language is associated with symbols and words that are communicated through humans to learn about past and present experiences and to share knowledge. Call systems between primates do not share ideas about the past or present because they are not humans, however, their calls could signal a threat coming which would be related to future knowledge or animal instincts. ASL, however, is the same as spoken language. For people who use sign language, this is their only way of communication. The emotion behind the sign language is lost but ideas and stories can be “spoken” through signs of a hand. The language behind ASL does have its difference between spoken English language creating a gap between how accurate the languages relate to each other.

The fish living in the water would want to learn and understand more about the unknown like Anthropologists who more commonly researching other countries culturally. This relates to the etic method and its concepts and how ideas are studied through an outsider point of view. The fish is studying the outside and not really looking on this inside of its “culture.” The emic method is one where the cultural studies are defined in terms of an individual who lives within a culture which is opposite of what Kluckholn is saying about the fish. The fish is unaware of its own surroundings which limits the fish’s ability to embrace its customs and traditions. If we compare this to American culture, the fish could be the Americans who are only living life through an insider perspective and not looking as an outsider in to get a better perspective of their own culture, beliefs, and traditions.
