Jaeggi and Gurven (2013) looked at food sharing as a way to reduce risks in humans and non-human primates. They looked at a few factors that might lead to a person being more willing to reciprocate or engage in food sharing. They found that both humans and non-human primates were more likely to approach long-term allies to engage in food sharing, reciprocal behaviors. They also found that food sharing is most likely to be initiated by the recipients. Therefore, the perceived values of reciprocation take precedent to the actual act of reciprocating or the symbolic/social capital that one might receive from reciprocating. Jaeggi and Gurven (2013) also note throughout their paper that food sharing acts as a risk buffer in many cases, and that it helps to reduce the potential costs that each participant might have otherwise. Thereby, stating that through food sharing human and non-human primates are engaging in risk reduction reciprocity. Pomianek et al. (2012) looks at the free rider as a role of cultural tradition and how they are identified and sanctioned. This will be beneficial to understand more about the previously discussed paper. Free riders are, "those who reap the benefits of collective action in social and economic exchanges while paying few or none of the costs” (Pomianek et al., 2012, p. 2).
