In the first poem “The Nergo Speaks of Rivers,” by Langston Hughes talks about how the speakers now the rivers as if they where the ancestors “like the flow of human blood in veins,” and the whole world connects to him as if it where special because no matter where the speaker goes there will alway be the rivers. The rhythm of this poem is almost like that of a heart because of the constant “I” in the beginning of the almost like thump, thump, and thump. It connects to the speaker of if the rivers are in the speaker body. In the poem “Song for a Dark Girl,” sounds like a eulogy for the speakers lost lover her husband that got lynched and she tries to pray at a “white” savior, but what is the use if he is white. In the end love is naked and blind. The poem “Harlem,” sound like it all over the place it sounds like a zit weird yes, but it does it “crust” or “stink like rotten meat?” The speaker could also talk about how bad Harlem is all these visual images seem like a very gross place to live in because at end it could “explode” to start over again. However, I think that the main theme or at least the one that popped out to me was about transformation, because Charlie Wales goes form this party maniac to becoming normal about the main parties every night, seeing different people, and really not caring about life in any way. However, at the end he has this epiphany and it comes when he sees his nine year old daughter Honoria Wales and Charlie starts to transform into a different person where he no longer cares for the world like bars, drugs/alcohol, and parties. Charlie stars to become the parent Honoria want, but it seems to late because he is constantly reminded of his past, and that seems to be holding him back, but the best part of transformation is time and only with time you can tell if Charlie
