Throughout his career, John Wooden has become an inspiration to many athletes and coaches around the world by demonstrating his many ways of leadership which he portrayed to people all around the world. John Wooden was an infamous basketball coach who led his teams at UCLA to win ten championships in the NCAA within eleven years between 1964 and 1975. From the article “Revisiting the Remarkable Legacy of John Wooden, the Greatest Coach of them All” by Seth Davis, we learn that John Wooden wrote books about his coaching and he has taught many life lessons to incoming generations in today’s society through his outstanding leadership. John Wooden constantly trained his players to put in all their effort and make sure that they were in good physical and mental condition. Wooden put an “emphasis on maximizing potential in areas you can control” (Davis 3). John Wooden wanted his players to feel confident in their abilities to perform well but also work hard in order to gain the results that the team would hope for. Additionally, the quality of being determined can allow leaders to persevere through difficult situations that they may face, by allowing them to not give up and find new ways to help them through hardships. In order to be a leader you need to show determination and how you will not give up, just like Jonas did in The Giver when he tried to restore his community from being in a dystopian society. Jonas showed his determination by trying to give memories back into his society where they had no individual freedoms, after he was selected as the new Receiver of Memory, because he wanted the citizens within the community to understand the struggles and triumphs that people experience in order to appreciate the value of life. Jonas continuously tried to bring memories back into the lives of citizens and stayed determined, in hopes that there would be a rewarding outcome.
