John Kotter, Harvard Business School Professor Emeritus and author, tells a story about a emperor penguin colony in Antarctica threatened by their changing environment and how they face these challenges together to succeed. Their tale is about resistance to change and how each penguin faces change differently, allowing the reader to relate with the different characters. The story walks the reader through an 8 step action plan that Kotter introduced in his prior book “Leading Change” which is reiterated again after this story. The 8 steps are:
1. Create a sense of urgency
2. Put a carefully selected group in charge of guiding the change
3. Find a sensible vision of a better future
