In John Cheever’s short story, “The Swimmer,” Neddy Merrill swims across the county in a string of pools. As Neddy runs from pool to pool, he is greeted with kindness and care. Then, a storm hits, along with some ridicule from the town. After the storm, Neddy grows weak and unhappy with his decision to swim across the county. The string of pools represents the events of an affair; his wife finding out about the affair is represented by the storm. “The Swimmer” is a short story that portrays the changes of a man’s life after he commits adultery.
Neddy has very different experiences over the course of his swim, most notably before and after the storm. Before the storm, Neddy has pleasant encounters with the owners of the pools.
