Jack the Ripper stole the lives of five women prostitutes, nonetheless there are rumors of five to six more. The identity of Jack the Ripper is unknown, but there have been over one hundred suspects throughout the years. His killing spree was in the late 1800s, beginning on August 31, 1888 with the death of Mary Anne Nichols. Other victims were Annie Chapman on September 8, 1888, Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes on September 30, and Mary Kelly on November 9, 1888 (“Welcome”). There is no specific reason that can be concluded as to why the murders occurred. The Whitechapel police believed that the killer had an animosity towards women for all of the murder victims were women. The police compiled a suspect list based off this motive to start. In a memorandum, Melville Mcnaghten named Aaron Kosminski as Jack the Ripper, writing, “had a great hatred of women…with strong homicidal tendencies.” (“Jack the Ripper”). Kosminski was very open with his hatred towards women leaving the police and detectives to take note. Motive alone was not going to be enough to arrest and convict Kosminski of the crimes. The Whitechapel police needed to find physical evidence to tie him to the
