He was the only son his father Thomas Stevenson and mother Margaret Isabella Balfour had. Stevenson was a sick child but he managed to attend Edinburgh Academy and at the age of 17, he entered Edinburgh University. He had shown a desire to write at such a young age, and would create, some work by imitating some of the famous writers. With all his desire to write, he had printed his first book that was known as “The Pentland Rising”. Stevenson was very rebellious, did not wish to listen nor follow his parent’s religion, and went to become a bohemian liberal, and sometime after in 1873 he suffered from a severe respiratory illness. This did not stop him from creating works of art. When returning home he produced “An Island Voyage” in 1878 and the following year he produced “Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes”. As a devoted writer, his career did not develop quickly, it took time in order for his writing career would pay off and he would be well known. Stevenson soon found love, in 1876-he meet an American woman named Fanny Vandergrift Osbourne, the two feel in love. His loving parents did not approve of this since Fanny was a divorced woman, Fanny moved back to California and Stevenson was in distraught. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, one is able to see the message in which Robert Louis Stevenson had. Robert Louis Stevenson was stating that in every person there is a darker side. Mr. Jekyll was a respected man and was very kind but when his experiment went bad it brought forth the dark side he was hiding. This message applies to today’s world because there are many criminals in which have a double personality. This is happens to be one of the reason why many criminal do not get jail time but instead get medical help. Robert Louis Stevenson is significant to the novel because many did not realize that the events in this thrilling novel are based on a real person who lived many years ago. The only difference between the characters and this real person was that Mr. Hyde committed many more evil deeds. The man in whom the story was based off only became a thief in the night. “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” is a story in which helps one see the true potential one has, it shows that no matter how good one seems to be there will always be a dark and conniving
