A hipster is by definition; a person that is pessimistic and cynical about the human race, hipsters do not care about grades and or school in any way, shape or form despite being intelligent and having quite a bit of common sense on their shoulders. Holden is quite a bit scatter brained and has a lack of motivation to really try and succeed in school, like most if not all hipsters. Holden, indistinguishably like any other teenager that exist in the 21st century- on the outside he is pessimistic and sarcastic; Holden not unlike many others, is a type A wannabe. He also, unfortunately does not reveal to the other people in his the true Holden. The only person that will ever truly know what is going on in anyone’s particular head, is the person whose head that the particular body’s attached to. Holden is talking to Mr. Spencer, who is one of his favored teachers at Pencey Preparatory Academy and the professor says to him, “Life is a game, boy”(8). On the outside, he completely agrees with what the professor says, “Yes, sir. I know it is. I know it.”(8). However in his mind, he acknowledges the fact, “Game my ass. Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are, then it’s a game, all right- I’ll admit it”(8). He thinks undoubtedly that unless the proverbial them is on the winning side in the game of life that there is nevertheless no point in playing the game of
