The Great Fitzgerald F. Scott Fitzgerald was a brilliant author who’s writing captured aura of the 1920’s and the hearts of millions of people around the world. Although Fitzgerald failed in more things than he succeeded in, and let that get the best of him, he’s still managed to bring his own story to the jazz age. He stole the heart of his wife and got his name in English books everywhere. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, named after a well-known author and cousin who wrote the “Star- Spangled Banner”, was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was born to an Irish- Catholic woman, Mary McQuillan, and a failed furniture maker, Edward Fitzgerald, on September 24, 1896. After his father’s career went south, they went east to New York to take a job as a salesman. When Fitzgerald was 12 his family moved back to Minnesota to live off of a small fortune left by his mother’s family and donations from his aunt. (“Bio.com”) A year after moving back, Fitzgerald got his first piece of writing published in his school paper at St. Paul Academy. At 15 years old his parents sent him to a Catholic school in New Jersey. At Newman School, he met a professor who encouraged his writing.
