Cooper’s “In defense of black rage”, asks questions like: why would an unarmed teen go against an armed police officer? or why should we move on when one of our own was killed for no reason? These questions all point out that the police’s actions are inexcusable. Another thing she points out is why do the Ferguson police call them animals when they are the ones that are dressed up in riot armor, armed with tear gas, and provoking the protesters to “bring it” (Brittney Cooper 3). These questions help support her point that the police 's actions are the ones who are more savage. In King’s Letter, He uses the same tactic by questioning the goals and ideals of the church and law. He points out that he is part of the children of God (church) and that he expected support from other supporters of god like white priests and bishops. But they who talk about peace and equality under god, do nothing because segregation “is the law” and do advocate the equality. His argument is where points out the hypocrisy of the church, how unfair the justice system is, and why he cannot do it [negotiating for freedom]the way[peaceful protest]they[government] wants. Both works use ethos to make the reader think about the credibility of the opposing faction. They both bring in counter arguments into it just so they can prove it wrong to prevent more counter arguments. In Martin Luther King’s letter, he brings up the fact that “Why can 't we negotiate instead of civil obedience, surely that will be better” then he points out that they always tried to negotiate but it isn 't working and that “freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor” (Martin Luther King 2). Cooper brings up the fact that people are trying to make them calm down and protest peacefully but can 't because who would stay calm …show more content…
This effect helps strengthen that their argument isn’t wrong by proving the counter argument strong.
Cooper uses pathos to make the reader feel sympathy. For example, she uses words like “We are tired ... “ and “Black people have every right to be angry” to gain sympathy and understanding from the reader. This is because “... humans are emotional creatures...” - Dale Carnegie , and Cooper shows her feelings with words of frustration, and annoyance so that we feel the same emotions she does.
King uses pathos by explaining the struggle of Negroes and how they have always been mistreated. Examples is when King uses “As in so many past experiences, our hopes had been blasted, and the shadow of deep disappointment settled upon us” (Martin Luther King Jr. 2) and this tactic makes the reader feel pity for their misfortune and understand that they have been betrayed countless times.
In both works, the usage of pathos makes the reader understand their
