[a] Lincoln’s higher purpose is “political liability” and “he wanted to connect his name with the great events of his generation, and so impress himself upon them as to link his name with something that would redound to the interest of his fellow man.” Lincoln had an ability to accept and adopt his melancholy and used this emotional stress to focus on his “higher purpose”. Because of this ability, he advanced his career more than usual when he had more severe events of melancholy.
[b] Lincoln advised his friend, “I would avoid being idle.” By having a long-standing history of dealing with melancholy, he understood who he is and how he can deal with his emotional depression. He “gave vent to his melancholy by reading, reciting, and composing poetry that dwelled on themes of death, despair, and human futility.” I believe this adaptation of melancholy is a great strategy to deal with stress and depression which everyone will encounter some degree during our lives.
