Blood, which is essential for life, is a specialized body fluid that has four main components and five main functions. Blood is something that every human being and living organism have in common. Unfortunately, like any other thing that has to do with human anatomy, blood can have a defect. Blood disorders are complications that occur in the main parts of the blood. It is crucial to be aware of the different components in blood, the symptoms, the main disorders, and any treatment plans that are available. But first, it is important to know and understand how blood works.
Blood is a fluid tissue that circulates through the body’s veins and arteries. It is made up of four main parts. The liquid part of the blood is called plasma. Plasma consists of proteins, water, and other solutes. The other three main components are red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets (“Blood Basics” n.d.). The main role of blood is to transport oxygen and nutrients to the body’s tissues and lungs. Other main functions include forming blood clots to prevent excessive blood loss, carrying cells and antibodies that fight infection, bringing waste products to the kidneys and liver to filter and clean blood, and to regulate body temperature. Red blood cells are the ones responsible for carrying oxygen from place to place and are the most abundant of the blood cells (Macon & Sloan, 2005).
