Literature is a language in itself. Understanding that language allows the reader to fully appreciate the work at hand. After all, the grammar of literature is "a set of conventions and patterns, codes and rules, that we learn to employ in dealing with a piece of writing" (Foster xii). Memories of past stories, seeing symbols in the writing, and pattern recognition play important roles when reading a book. Pattern recognition in literature can help the reader decipher texts that would otherwise be puzzling. One symbol recognition that will allow a reader to appreciate a literary work was the mockingbird in To Kill a Mockingbird. Understanding that the mockingbird represents innocence, and that killing one would essentially be killing innocence as well, assures the reader of one of the biggest themes in the book. This will help comprehend and appreciate the political and social awareness Harper Lee tried to convey.

For example, the short story "Araby" by James Joyce contains a perfect example of a biblical allusion. The story is about the loss of innocence of the narrator. In biblical terms, this can be referred to as the "fall". The allusion in the story that supports that statement is the placement of an apple tree in the middle of a garden where the narrator plays. One doesn 't have to read a page of the Bible to at least know the story of Adam and Eve and their loss of innocence after eating from the Fruit of Knowledge. Foster clearly supports this idea when he states that "Araby" is a "short little gem about the loss of innocence"
