In today’s day and age, many people continue to be uneducated on what HPV truly is and therefore, remain unsure if getting the HPV vaccination is necessary for them. HPV, which stands for human papillomavirus, is the most common STI (commonly used abbreviation used to refer to a sexually transmitted infection) found in society. While there are various different kinds of HPV, most of which are fairly harmless and go away on their own, other types of HPV can lead to other health issues developing such as genital warts and cancers such as cervical cancers. According to data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly twelve thousand new cases of cervical cancer and four thousand deaths occur in the United States alone every year. The idea of developing cervical cancer is a frightening thought for many women; however, the HPV vaccine has been shown to have a positive effect on preventing the chance of this happening. But many have presented the major question: is the HPV vaccine helpful or harmful to young girls? While most research seems to point towards the idea that the vaccine is overall very helpful in lowering the rates of HPV in girls seventeen to nineteen years of age, some still remain wary of its effects on those who are vaccinated.
