This song which was released in 1967 and is written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney is my favorite Beatles song and in my opinion one of the greatest songs of all time. “A Day In The Life” was the last track in the Beatles iconic album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. This album was unique because the songs were from the perspective and viewpoint of a mythical band which gave the Beatles tremendous creative freedom in the songs of the album. The album and songs in it represented another drastic shift in the Beatles stylistic development. John Lennon wrote the beginning and ending of the song in G major, while Paul McCartney wrote the middle section in E major (Benitez, 2018). This song is unique because it’s almost like there is two songs within one song. The best part of this song in my opinion is the escalating and echoing piano chord right before McCartney’s middle section begins. The echoing piano chord made it sound like an exciting change and turning point in the song was coming. The use of an alarm clock also fits in perfectly at the end of the first section because the first words of the middle section are “Woke up fell out of bed”. McCartney’s middle section falls in line with the songs title because he is singing about things people do in their everyday lives. For example, combing one’s hair, waking up, smoking, and catching a bus are all things people typically do on an ordinary day. The ending of the song is masterful because it sounds like it’s going to repeat what happened at the beginning transition with the escalation of the piano chord but it shockingly ends with a fading out piano chord that lasts for over 50 seconds! I found it interesting that “A Day In The Life” was positioned as the last track of the Sgt. Pepper album even after the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)”. I believe it was placed last
