Social psychology is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “The study of the manner in which the personality, attitudes, motivations, and behavior of the individual influence and are influenced by social groups.” After reading the modules, article, and watching the video, it is difficult to pinpoint a singular influence on the employee’s behavior to begin to break all of the windows of a Burger King. The article entailed a story regarding a Minnesota Burger King and its employees. Late one night, the restaurant received a phone call from a supposed fire department official, this individual informed them that there was a gas leak in the building and they needed to break all of the windows in order to prevent the building from exploding. Due to the caller’s believable and authoritative demeanor, the manager, who spoke to him on the phone, believed him completely and instructed the employees to begin destroying the windows. People passing by this establishment saw the behavior and called the police to warn them of what was happening. Once the police got to the scene, it was determined the phone call was just a prank call and the man was not a fire department official. Now, we turn to social psychology to attempt to explain this erratic behavior. I believe one of the factors that contributed to the Burger King employees complying to the “warning” is the fact that when we are children, one of the first things taught is to respect elders and people of official positions.…
