How Did The Progressive Era Reform

The Progressive Era was a century reform movement that required a return of control from government to the people. This resulted in restoring economic opportunities and the injustice in American life. Some of the Progressive reform goals were protecting social welfare, promoting moral improvement, creating economic reform and fostering efficiency. During the 1900-1920, the Progressive Era reforms included food acts, labor restrictions and civil rights of African Americans . The reformers who took part in these specific reforms were President Theodore Roosevelt and degraded African Americans. These reformers worked tirelessly to change the nation with Roosevelt's Meat Inspection Act, Roosevelt's Square Deal and African American’s persistence to civil rights. This act was created to prevent the manufacture, sale and transportation of misbranded, poisonous and harmful food, drugs, medicines and liquors. This act entrusted manufacturer or distributors with the responsibility of appropriately testing all foods and drugs that were going to be consumed by a human. Under this act, prescriptions were only given to a patient by a licensed physicians. Prescription also had to have warning labels that labeled the possible side effects of the drug. If a manufacturer or distributor did not meet these standards, they could possibly be prosecuted by the federal government. Theodore Roosevelt had passed this law in 1906. Roosevelt created this act based off the the muckraker reports of unsanitary meat packing plants, the multiple passages from Upton Sinclair’s novel The Jungle and the Neill-Reynolds report.
