The standard army instruction was to take 20 milligrams of dextroamphetamine for 48 hours of combat readiness these instructions were rarely followed overdosing on speed is very dangerous it makes the body works overtime to pump blood to the heart. The already elevated heart rate and blood pressure skyrocket, potentially causing a heart attack or stroke. The body can go into shock or coma, causing irreparable damage.)(The Atlantic). (The American Government Also supplied with other drugs cocaine, marijuana, heroin and along with lots of others.)(Encyclopedia.com). These drugs were used daily within the American Military, to help overcome and cope with the constant fear of dying, the extremely poor living condition, to relieve stress and to make them feel bulletproof/superhuman. The American Government referred to the use of drugs as tactical and that the drugs had a very positive effect on the soldiers. But in the long term, the use of drugs had a very negative effect on the soldiers and their families which I think out weighted the positive effects the drugs had on the soldiers. Being able to stay awake for 48 hours and be active for that amount of time is crazy but very irresponsible of the American government because staying awake and physically active for that amount of time is very damaging to your body let alone doing it at least once a week staying awake for over 24 hours yet alone 48 leads to prolonged sleep deprivation which can lead to death, but it almost certainly makes you more prone to diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and depression. The use of drugs recreationally in the war was another advantage it helped with a quick turn around and help them overcome and forget about traumatic things that have happened to them or around
