Horror films are movies that seek to bring your fears and nightmares to life. They to scare with the morbid and grotesque while entertaining also. They often involve an evil entity, event or person. Horror films feature supernatural creatures like werewolves, ghosts, vampires, witches, and zombies. They also dive into fears of death, of the unknown and loss of identity. They show the darker side of life and expose our vulnerabilities. Movies that push your buttons of anxiety and uneasiness. Make you squirm and try to get a scare out of you. Horror films sometimes mixes with other genres like science fiction, thriller, mystery, fantasy and romance.

During this time, you saw the first movies from big names like Steven Spielberg with Jaws, Brain de Palma with Carrie from the famous novel from Stephen King. Then later came the independent films like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween 1978. After the success of the Halloween movie studios backed slasher films like Friday the 13th in 1980 and Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. In the 1980’s came new technology, with special effects that brought horror into a new level. Now with latex, foam and animatronics movies like Alien, The Thing, An American Werewolf in London and Howling now could be seen in full color close-ups.
During the 1990’s, horror films were big on slasher movies. In the movie Scream, the teens were now more self-aware of horror. They knew the rules in these movies. This movie was followed by the I Know What I Did Last Summer franchise and later the Final Destination movies. Later in 2000’s came a new unique twist on horror arose. This was called Torture Porn.
