Health disparity is a great issue in the United States. Health disparities allude health or health care differences between ethnic groups and include differences in morbidity, mortality, and access to health care. When comparing the health outcomes, for various and numerous health conditions, minorities suffer disproportionately from disease, injury, death, and disability compared to non-Hispanic whites. This paper investigates probable reasons as to why these health disparities exist in minorities, predominantly African Americans. Socioeconmoics, access to health care, and quality of care will be examined in depth.
One of the key attributes to health disparity in ethnic minorities is socioeconomic status. Socioeconomic status is characterized as a mixture of income, education, and occupation statuses. “Lower socioeconomic status is associated with higher mortality, and the greatest disparities occur in middle adulthood (ages 45–65).” Data strongly suggests that there is a relationship between socioeconomic status and health at all levels.
A second variable contributing to health disparity is hardship. Low-income communities are more likely prone to environmental risk, substandard living, and lack quality education systems. A contributor between socioeconomic status and health is the increased level of stress and chronic stress experienced by those living in disadvantaged communities.
