He uses Harrison to show a sense of rebellion to show that people will eventually protest and work against the handicaps until their type of government ends completely. In the story Harrison Bergeron tries to stand up for himself and the rest of the people from the handicaps to change the government. And when he tries and does that he gets shot and killed (Vonnegut 220). Harrison tried to change the government but does not achieve. Vonnegut is trying to get across that eventually this type of government where everyone is equally being going to come to an end. Because being equal in a government isn’t it going to always work we need competition in order for a society to function or work. He creates a world where beautiful people wear masks to cover their faces and strong people to carry weights to make the feel equal to the lowest common denominator population. In the story he writes about how Harrison ask one of the ballerinas to be his empress so one of them stands up. He removes her handicaps and the ugly mask that hides her face. Reveling her beautiful face. (Vonnegut219) He focus equality on the emphasis on beauty and not anything else. Equality should be focus on how people are diverse which make our country special. Not the fact that if someone is beautiful you hide their face by an ugly mask. Equality should not be focus on how to hide beauty but to inforce it because everyone is beautiful in their own way and that what makes up diversity in our society. He focuses equality on making everyone look the wearing those ugly mask but when Harrison takes off that mask he shows everyone else how beautiful the ballerina is. And then they start dancing and having their times of their lives. Harrison gives an example here of how people should be able to dance, be happy and love with no limit. Being happy and learning how to teach one on another is a concept of life. Vonnegut is letting us know that equality does not come from everyone being equal it comes from the people and the people is what makes our society
