In Shakespeare’s most complex play called Hamlet, it takes on the themes of incest, melancholy, and misogyny. Hamlet explores the depth of whether he wanting to commit suicide due to the fact of his uncle (Claudius) marrying his mother (Gertrude), and has taken the throne of Denmark. In addition, his mother is sleeping with Claudius allowing a reign of corruption to start. In Hamlet’s words, “ A little more than kin and less than kind.”(I.2.65) He describes that he is furious with his mother actions and will not tolerate anymore. Shakespeare uses incest and misogyny to show that when people have power, they are bound to carry guilt and corruption.
In the start of Hamlet, Hamlet finds out that his father which was the last king of Denmark has died, and that his Uncle Claudius has taken the leadership and his mother Gertrude has already remarried to Claudius only two months after. Then, the ghost of the Old King Hamlet meets Hamlet to tell the tale of his death and what Gertrude has been doing. The significance of the ghost is the tale that he speaks is true. To test the Ghost’s theory, a group of actors arrive in town of Denmark so Hamlet recruits them to act out a play written by him which tells the tale of King Hamlet’s death. The play is acted out, then the most crucial scene occurs where it shows how Claudius kills King Hamlet. One of the actor pours poison into another actor’s ear in which he dies.
