Emotions are what separate us and makes a true individual. Guilt is an emotion that the mind doesn’t usually handle very well. There are two types of guilt. The first is the guilt that a person feels for themselves, it can consume ones-self and send the person into a spiral of self-destruction. This guilt can come from when someone tries to better themselves and it falls apart right in front of them. The second type of guilt is the type of guilt that someone has for others. This type guilt is when someone sees the struggle of another and knows that they are the reason for their struggle. Regret is an emotion that can go hand in hand with guilt. Regret can occur when something doesn’t go correctly and that leads to wanting to go back and choosing another path. Regret also falls into the second type of guilt for that same reason. This essay will show that both guilt and regret are similar in Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, Othello by William Shakespeare and A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry.
In Oedipus Rex, Oedipus tries to trick the Gods by trying to avoid his fate to kill his father and sleep with his mother. This fate is set into motion by Oedipus’s mother Iokaste when she sends Oedipus as a baby to be murdered by a servant. Oedipus is spared by the servant and he eventually returns home and kills his father without knowing he was his father then turns around and marries his mother thinking she was just a Queen who lost her husband.
