Eye liner, black clothing, tight pants, electric guitars, and drums; these are the first thing to pop into one’s mind when the punk rock is mentioned. These qualities would not have been associated with punk rock if it were not for the band Green Day. Green Day consists of band members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, Tré Cool, and Jason White. Originating from East Bay, California, Green Day formed in 1986. Because of Green Day, along with some other accredited punk bands, punk rock was revived and became mainstream in the United States.
Like every great story, there is a beginning. In 1986, “Childhood friends Billie Joe Armstrong (guitar, vocals) and Mike Dirnt (bass) formed their first band, Sweet Children, …show more content…
In the beginning they were not accredited with much and acclaimed to be “too soft and pop-oriented” (Lockett “Green Day Will Likely Go Into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Next Year. They Deserve It.”). When they dropped their album Dookie that is when their name was recognized. Dookie “opened the door to a mid-’90s wave of popped-up punk and provided a launching pad for the current crop of melodic pop-punkers.” (D'angelo “How Green Day's Dookie Fertilized A Punk-Rock Revival”). The LP is known as the main aspiration for many of the punk bands known today and is also known for its “challenge of convention” (D'angelo “How Green Day's Dookie Fertilized A Punk-Rock Revival”). Songs like Longview did not care about what society thought was acceptable in music. Dookie ran on that teen angst, but after their album Warning Green Day sounded dry as if they were out of musical inspiration. That all changed with the birth of American Idiot. Around 2004, the nation was in political chaos between the liberals and conservatives. “Out in the East Bay, Green Day sensed how fucked up things were. They saw the country unraveling feverishly into red states and blue states, conservatives and liberals. They saw the world around them cowering in paranoia and fear, struggling to come to grips with the post-9/11 world.” (Bray “Green Day's American Idiot Turns 10”). American Idiot was born from political outrage and the first to go big with its message. Although punk rock was first made in the club scene, Green Day is the first band to make punk rock onto the arenas. Awesome, great, cool, wonderful,
