Improved Essays
For this assignment, I have opted to take a look at a particular genre, this genre being gangster films. In order for me to tell if a film from this genre fits into the category of “gangster” I have decide to study a film called “Goodfellas”. By analyzing this movie I will be able to look at characteristics that have put this film in the gangster genre. There is also a trend that is important to the setting of gangster films, which is that most if not all gangster films happen in the hustle and bustle of the city or at least suburbia, for example “Goodfellas” was taking in Queens,Ny.
So first what is Genre? A genre is a type, or category, and genre films are usually easily recognizable as part of a certain genre (Goodykoontz & Jacobs 2014).

power and wealth in seen all through the “Goodfellas” just by the way they dress fancy suit and shiny shoes and the big amount of money they carry around with them. continue to become more wealthier they move up in their position with the gang. “They dramatize a social statement on a need for change, or demonstrate the destructiveness of a lifestyle in a way intended to discourage others from imitating it, although some may not recognize that point if the characters are appealing” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014). Another type of convention in this movie is Corruption. In gangster films police corruption is more prevalent because in theory they 're the main threat to the gangster’s enterprises by trying to shut them down. The corruption doesn’t stop with just the cops in “Goodfellas”, it extends to the department of corrections. There is a scene when the Henry is locked up with other members of the gang, and they having wine, fresh food, newspapers, cigars, and coming and going as they wished basically living the life in jail. Another convention to this genre is the code they all live by. They have rules gang member have to live up to, to protect the “family business”. This is shown when Henry gets arrested, and after a small punishment, Henry earns the trust and respect him for not telling the police what mob he is affiliated with. From that moment he starts off his new life of crime. To me this film lives up to all the conventions of this genre, and it’s a wonderful

The hazy lines of America’s humiliating war with Mexico’s cross-border drug cartels are in risk of becoming a new cinema saying. This is a crude fact that Sicario shows present-day drug wars beside the US-Mexico border. For people who are watching this kind of movie for the first time, the side shown in Sicario is completely different.…

If I were to tell you to watch a film about men in prison, what would you think? most people would think it’s another ordinary Hollywood flick. The film “The Shawshank Redemption” based on the novella “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” succeeds in avoiding the familiar and it manages to redeem Hollywood in the eyes of people who feared it in a dark ocean full of predictability and clichés. With music, visuals, script and acting, the director of this film Frank Darabont has proved himself the master of the craft to create one of the most recognisable films. For those unaware, The Shawshank Redemption is about a man named Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) who is wrongly convicted of murder and is sentenced to two consecutive life terms…

Consistently rated among the top films made of all time, Godfather trivia should be interesting to anyone with an interest in classic films. Most recently, to show how highly it is regarded, the AFI ranked it only behind Citizen Kane on one of their best movie lists. The film was based on a book written by Mario Puzo, and tells the story of the Corleone mob family. The Godfather, the novel, was one of the most successful novels of all time.…

In modern day Latin America people struggle for even the most basic of human needs such as water, sanitation, and food. Governments in many countries do little to help lift the people out of poverty and give way to a higher quality of life for the poor while letting companies with vast resources come into their country, take their resources, and in return do little other than pay a meager wage to those who labor for these companies. The systems that are put in place by forced democracy are meant to keep separation between the rich and the poor. Three movies that depict how these systems work, or don’t work, are City of God, Even the Rain, and Trinkets and Beads. These movies have commonalities that the people of Latin America deal with day to day like loyalty, poverty, drug trafficking, slums, and exploitation of the indigenous people.…

Very few organizations had the influence and had the control over America’s underworld like the Chicago Outfit. The Outfit was a group of gangsters that were ruthless and they were willing to take any means necessary to get what they wanted. They took over a city and took advantage of a federal law that greatly benefited organized crime. The most famous of all mafia kingpins, Alphonse Gabriel “Al” Capone, controlled the Outfit and had a major hand in making it one of the most powerful organizations for many years.…

Genre are branches of styles in my opinion. Genres are like opera or symphony. For example, Symphony is a genre designation for a standard form usually a four-movement orchestral work. Music styles changes with every period of time. The authors wrote that music started with Gregorian chant (600-850), went to the Romanesque period (850-1150), then to the Renaissance period (1450-1600), to the Baroque period (1600-1750), to the Classical period (1750-1825), to the Romantic period (1820-1900), and through the twentieth century to now.…

The title of this essay makes sure to give nothing way into regards to what the article is about. When I saw the title “The Crooked Ladder,” I didn’t know what to expect from the reading. I certainly didn’t jump the topic upward mobility in capitalist criminal trade, or what it means to be a criminal with modern day law enforcement. This is an instance that the title of the essay perhaps left me to anticipate some sort of personal narrative, but instead this piece of creative nonfiction uses the experiences of people a supporting evidence for an argument about what in means to be a gangster. The author of this essay uses creative nonfiction in order to tell relevant stories that people experienced in a way that would fit into the argument that…

In regards to ‘The Godfather’, not unlike the other two films, the story revolves around a male hierarchy. The male characters are dressed in smart, expensive suits, which could suggest that they are highly respected and that they are confident and paramount. Additionally, fashion is regarded important in Italian families. After Michael Corleone becomes the head of the Corleone family, he says ‘women and children can be careless, not men’ which could suggest that the men in the family are supposed to protect and provide, while the women raise the children and socialise. The women are traditionally domestic, and this film does not oppose that.…
