Gene Therapy And Gene Therapy

In Charles Davenport’s book Eugenics, the Science of Human Improvement by Better Breeding he quotes, “Two imbecile parents, whether related or not, have only imbecile offspring.” (Davenport 28) However, the field of genetics as developed a technique that could eventually allow selection of particular traits to show in offspring that is not related to the parent’s genetic disposition. This technique is called gene therapy and is specifically linked to genetic engineering. Genes provide the instructions for the cell’s organelles to make all of its proteins. However, genes can be damaged by environmental or natural factors which can cause the malfunction in the proteins of the cell. Gene therapy is a type of treatment that is currently being …show more content…
In 2014 the book Molecular Therapy: The Journal of the American Society of Gene Therapy published a section particularly in gene therapy being used for the treatment of cystic fibrosis. The results of this study for clinical use were not successful. (“How Does Gene…”) However, the research indicated that if the vectors were to reach the target cells it would improve clinical outcomes. Research must continue in developing a vector that can penetrate through the barriers of the cells in the lung. Genetic researchers are also working with this type of therapy in patients with cancer and those that have neurodegenerative disease and immune deficiencies by the method of targeting particular genes in …show more content…
She was the first child to receive gene therapy and is two years cancer free since the treatment. (“ Gene Therapy Scores…”) Emily is just one example of a benefit at which gene therapy is successful. However, this technique can be potentially used in a manner that allows for particular selection in gene function. The ability to use this technology in selection of human genetics has the criteria to be extraordinary. Imagine, two parents that have a genetically dominate disorder like Huntington’s disease can produce an offspring that is genetically normal for that trait. The prevention of genetic diseases being inherited to the next generation can prolong life expectancy. The term ‘designer babies’ commonly used in reference to the scenario of modifying embryos for cosmetic traits is a misconception to the overall benefits of gene therapy. ( “What is a …”) Although, gene therapy has the potential for selection of traits like gender, appearance, and intelligence the main focus of this treatment is to able embryos to be rid of genetic
