I want to teach high school and so most high schoolers feel as though they are too old for assigned seating; however, leaving them to choose their own seat may be more detrimental than they would realize. Each class has different dynamics, so leaving the class to pick their seats on the first day and then for the next class, after examining the group then assigning seats with the intent to put high status students by low status students. In addition to that, making partner work and group work a necessary part of the class can help promote conversation between the two groups. I have found that the more I am forced to work with people outside of my immediate friend group the more I appreciate people I otherwise wouldn’t have known. Lastly, as a teacher I plan to make participation an important part of the final grade that way people must speak to do well in the class, but also, I will be conscientious of making sure, to the best of my ability, that all voices are heard during class time so that no small group of students dominate every class discussion. It may be difficult to get the students on board because they may feel forced to be separated and they may see it as unfair; however, the key is perseverance and a positive classroom
