Assimilation
Assimilation is the means by changing an individual and or their beliefs to another, through various means. Some examples would be Christianization. Some of the acts of Christianization included Indigenous people not being allowed to use their own language, or forbidding to participate in their own cultural activities as well as to refrain from customs and beliefs. Rights and rituals of individuals are no longer accepted. Expectations of specific behaviour, were placed on indigenous individuals, even though this is not what they know, or believe. These social expectations slowly undermined the original knowledge that had been acquired, causing the individual to believe the new way. The internal turmoil that assimilation causes an individual is traumatic in various levels of consciousness. We see a variety of changes in the individual’s cognitive health, emotional health, and psychological health, which in turn leads to physical health. Through the process of promoting the Cree language as stated in the article, we are opposing the original assimilation of the past. With hopes, this will be a starting point of our future.

It helps shape the groups to whom they are. Culture plays a huge role in my article, as it discusses the need to recognize and learn their language from their own people. To instill strength and unity in a community, through identifying whom they are as a people. Defining who someone is as a person, builds character. Helping make individuals feel whole, will increase self worth, increase efficacy and in turn reduce depression and the chances of suicide. Supporting Culture from indigenous will help heal our past.
