Homophobia Throughout History and the Effects It Has Had on the LGBTQ+ Community Ever since written records have been around, homosexuality has been documented throughout history. Gradually, the changes of homosexuality began to vary within several different cultures, causing some points of the past to be more progressive than others ("Saint Aelred the Queer”) Homophobia has not always been present, but once it began to be associated with disgusting animals such as hyenas who were thought to eat corpses and involve themselves with homosexual acts, people began to relate homosexuality to something distasteful ("Saint Aelred the Queer”). In some cases, people believe that homophobia is a personal idea, but others think that homophobia is a more national thing, meaning it does not come from a personal situation (Weiss 4). Back then the Greeks did not even tend to view people as specifically male/female, but rather more of a blend between the two ("Saint Aelred the Queer”). Another common aspect of Greek life was intergenerational relationships, which could have easily been with same-sex couples ("Saint Aelred the Queer”).
