I would seek knowledge about the specific culture, meaning I will learn about where my clients are from and research information related to the client views and beliefs. I would listen and observe how the client interacts for example, their body language and acknowledge the differences between the client and myself and not make assumptions. As a counselor, I would be committed to understanding the beliefs and views of my client and show empathy, show them that they can trust me. American Natives have the highest rate of substance abuse, and violence whether its domestic or sexual assault than other groups. This is because most do not report the crime to authorities. Elders of the Native American community suggest that because the rates are so high, is because it relates to the lost of their culture, they state the people who identify as not having non Native American values (Abbott & Chase, 2008). Historically, Native Americans were forced from their homes, and majority were forced to learn the values of the majority culture and this had a negative impact on their culture (Szlemko, Wood, & Thurman, 2006). As a counselor working with a client that is Native American, be aware of their nonverbal communication, they may tend to be quiet or non-attentiveness, they may shut down and not participate because they maybe dealing with
