The focal point of conflict in South Asia is the disputed region of Kashmir, which is divided between India and Pakistan. In spite of a ceasefire agreement that took effect in 2003, border skirmishes are a regular occurrence .
The prospect of another war against India hangs over Pakistan like the sword of Damocles. The disputed region of Kashmir remains the primary flashpoint, with the countries clashing regularly over the territory.
Militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba have fought Indian forces in Kashmir for a number of years with the aim of ending Indian occupation of the Muslim majority province . India has long accused Pakistan of supporting such groups. Islamabad, meanwhile, claims that India is assisting Baloch separatists.
Dialogue over Kashmir has repeatedly been broken up due to cross border attacks in the region. In late December 2015, Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi came for a surprise visit to Pakistan. However, in early January 2016, a military base in Pathankot, India was attacked for which New Delhi blamed Pakistan based Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM). In a positive development following the attack, Pakistani authorities allegedly arrested some members of JeM, and a Pakistani investigation team visited India. However, relations soured again when Pakistan alleged that an Indian spy was apprehended in Balochistan in March 2016 .
