“I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best” (Kahlo). This quote sums up entirely why Frida Kahlo was the best artist to choose because many can identify so much with her and the feelings that she displayed to the world. Though many didn’t go through the events that she did in her childhood or anywhere in her lifestyle, people still do feel connected to her ideas, her thoughts, and also her art which made it a little easier to choose two art pieces from her. The chosen pieces were “The Two Fridas” and “The Broken Column” because they truly capture people’s attention and the story behind them pull at this little part of us. On the 6th of July, 1907 in Coyoacan, Mexico City, Mexico, Frida …show more content…
The artwork shows two different Fridas wearing different attires, holding different objects, yet having the same face and sitting on the same bench. The portrait is supposed to represent how she has different personalities. In her diary she writes, how it displays her depression and lonliness with the seperation of her and Diego Rivera. In the painting, the Frida in the white modern gown, is shown with a scissort dripping blood on her dress and cut of her skin to show her heart and veins. The other Frida is in a traditional dress holding the other Fridas hands and are connected by a main artery. Traditional Frida has her heart on display too and they both sit in a very gloomy setting. She uses very dark colors for the background to give a depressed town while the fridas are clothed in bright clothing (the white is not wedding dress white but stained and old looking). I feel Frida was trying to tell the world how she felt very divided without Diego and that, that oneness that she felt was no longer present. When I look at this piece of work, it reminds ab out how divided I feel, with my traditional self (being haitian) and my modern self (being raised and adapting to American cultures). For me, its been a very depressing trip in that aspect where you’re basically split in half and struggling with both …show more content…
This artwork is a selfportrait of Frida crying in a desert like setting all by herself. She displays herself in a steel corset (which she actually wore for 5 months) that seems to be holding her split body together. In the center of her, there’s a steel rod going straight upto her neck and there are nails intact to her body and also the cloth covering her lower portion. In her diary, she would write about how this painting showed the physical and emotional pain that she endured for the last ten years of her life. Yet, she saw some humor in it, saying, “You must laugh at life… Look very very closely at my eyes…the pupils are doves of peace. That is my little joke on pain and suffering…". Just like “The Two Fridas”, she used such vibrant colors that create sort of a vibrant gloominess. When I look at the painting, I’m able to get a sense of the pain that she felt when being held captive in that brace. It doesn’t hit home personally though, because I’ve never broken anything or have been bed ridden. The aspects of the nails in the skin though, is relateable because if I’m in pain, I do compare it to having a bunch of nails poked into your skin or even having a hammer, place them deeper into your
