Comparing The Three Types Of Addresses Used On A Network Essay
Application layer – A port is assigned to an application for direct routing of incoming and or outgoing data.
Network layer – IP addresses are assigned to each individual computer. The IP addresses can change and are often assigned by the DHCP server.
Data link layer – Mac Addresses are used to identify which hardware is the sender and which is the receiver. All hardware items have a MAC address. For example: a switch, a computer, and a hub would all have their own MAC address and that address is permanent to each individual device.
2. (5 points) How is TCP different from UDP?
TCP – Using TCP a computer will send packets to a website and in return the website will send packets back and the computer will once again send packets back letting confirming transition of the data, this is called a hand shake. Each time you click a link the packets are sent from the computer to the website. Using TCP this will allow checks of the packets for corrupt data or missing packets.
UDP – Doesn’t allow for checking the packets, the website just continually sends packets.
3. (5 points) What is a subnet and why do networks need them?
Having a subnet allows to break a large network into smaller networks for the purpose of sending and receiving data. This process is useful for larger networks and is also helpful for security reasons. This can allow for faster data transmission.
