The writer can affect the reader in a negative or positive way through the author’s use of literary devices such as narrative voice, tone, and symbolism. A majority of Britain was Christian, including parliament; therefore, by constantly stating religious allusions and diction, he comforts and seduces Parliament. Equiano also uses religion diction to make parliament feel guilty about slavery. Using religious diction as a form of getting his exigence across is very helpful because Equiano comforts parliament and then he attacks. Equiano also includes many well known literary works that parliament, as educated men, would most likely know. Examples that he includes are pieces from The Iliad and Paradise Lost. Just like religion, Equiano attempts to get his exigence across through these literary works. At the beginning of the book itself, Equiano includes a frontispiece, which is very deceiving, but provides comfort to parliament, his audience.
