Comparing The American Dream In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

In the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck several of the characters have an American dream but all of them have problems getting their dream to actually come true. At the end of the story Lennie snaps Curley's wife's neck and then Lennie gets peacefully shot by George.This was the point where many of the characters realize that their future they want was not going to happen. George had the American dream of having his own farm house and never having to work for someone again. Lennie also has a similar dream except, Lennie wants a lot of rabbits on his farm. Finally, Curley's wife was going to be a movie star and still wants to be one. George however, is really close to achieving his goal but cannot really finish it off.

Since then, she has always wanted to be a movie star.She tells people,'"... put me in the movies. Says I was a natural."' (88) and she walks around the ranch with fancy red cloths thinking, and hoping that one day she will become a movie star. Most of the people that work on a ranch have plain, dirty, and ripped up farm cloths but not Curley's wife. She is still trying to look as "purty" as she can just in case the man from the movies ever shows up. Curley's wife explains that if she got the movie job she wanted nothing bad would happen and she wouldn't have to spend a cent on anything. If she had been a movie star she,"' ...coulda sat in them big hotels,an had pitchers took of me.'"(89). Curley's wife has been very lonely since that time so all she really can do on the ranch is think to herself about what she could have been. Curley's wife would have a completely different life if she did get the job but unfortunately she faces the same problems George and Lennie face about
