He has pets such as birds, rabbits, goldfish, a dog, a small monkey, and a cat. His best loved animal is a cat named Pluto. Pluto means so much to him, and he spends most of his time with Pluto. The cat follows him around everywhere which demonstrates how close their friendship is. All of a sudden, the narrator begins drinking and every aspect of his life change. The narrator admits, “My disease grew upon me—for what disease is like Alcohol!” Alcohol causes his behavior to change. He states, “I grew, day by day, more moody, more irritable, more regardless of the feelings of others. I suffered myself to use intemperate language to my wife. At length, I even offered her personal violence.” Over time, he becomes progressively worse, and he cannot no longer control his evil actions. A literary critic Dawn Sova from Montechasir State University writes “The narrator admits to suffering from serious alcoholism, which seems to be the chief cause of his growing viciousness, as he admits that once he started drinking his attitude toward his wife and his formerly loved pets changed” (Sova 34). Due to this horrible disease, thousands of people were killed and many people wanted to escape from the disease. “There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution.” When the disease developed in the country, the symptoms were known to most people. Having blood come out of the face and body was a sign that showed they were infected with the red death. “The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men.”Although Poe had never experienced the plague he did understand the horror of illness. Poe witnessed disease with his own eyes. He saw his beloved wife, mother, brother, and foster mother suffer from tuberculosis and they would throw up blood as the disease worsened. The red death can actually be associated with the red blood that comes from the mouth due to Tuberculosis. The mask of the red death is considered an allegory in which an actual quest arrived at a ball thrown by prince prospero. There is no way to kill the red death; all die. In poe’s life there was no escaping from tuberculosis. Once the disease struck, it could not be cured, and death would eventually come. In the story, the red death comes to the Prince’s ball and it kills the wealthy nobility. For Poe, this symbolized how everyone around him who had tuberculosis died. It did not

He states that his “disease grew upon [him]-for what disease is like Alcohol!” (Poe 5). This displays his calling off of his thoughts, doings, etc. on his habit of drinking rather than his perverseness, or desire to do against what is acceptable. Clearly, this does not seem to be the case, as several moments where he would act quite maliciously and without reason, he was in fact not drunk but seemingly sober.…

The ideas and subjects expressed in Edgar Allan Poe’s works are a reflection of his life and times. Poe, the widely known author of “Annabel Lee,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Raven” married his wife Virginia in 1836 (Poe/Bio 1). He loved her very much, and it is said that he based some of his stories on their affection (Poe/Bio). Sadly, his wife died in 1847 of tuberculosis, and “Poe became increasingly depressed and erratic” though he still continued writing (Britannica 1). Many considered Poe to be an alcoholic, which a prominent factor why people thought he possessed an unsound mind (Britannica 1).…

Paragraph 1- There is much debate over the conclusion of Edgar Allan Poe’s death. Experts are split between rabies or alcohol poisoning for the cause of Poe’s death. After reading multiple articles concerning Poe’s death, I have concluded that Poe did not die due to alcohol poisoning because there is no substantial evidence that indicates it. For instance, in the account, Poe’s Death Is Rewritten as Case of Rabies, Not Telltale Alcohol, by The New York Times, an expert states, “The writer (Poe) was so sensitive to alcohol that a glass of wine would make him violently ill for days.…

Edgar Alan Poe wrote among many short stories, The Masque of the Read Death. Although the title sounds horribly eerie, the story itself succeeded in becoming even creepier. Disease, known as the Read Death, struck a kingdom, killing off many subjects very gruesomely. The ruler, a prince known as Prospero, did nothing to assist in treating those ill, or preventing others from contracting Read Death. Instead, he ran, hiding away in a secluded castle, with noblemen, and entertainers.…

His statement can be proven through Woodsworth’s history, and other poems such as Maya Angelou’s, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” and Edgar Allan Poe’s, “Alone.” William Wordsworth was an English Romantic poet who helped the start the Romantic Age movement in English literature.…

Edgar Allen Poe used symbolism to reveal the true nature of the characters and themes of the story. In The Masque of the Red Death, Edgar Allan Poe uses the intense symbolism of the seven chambers to establish the idea that death is inevitable no matter how important one is in society.…
