Elements of Gothic Literature Many authors incorporate gothic element in their work to affect the reader’s emotions. In the novel Miss. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs and the short stories The Raven, The Masque of the Red Death, and The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe contain the gothic elements of the supernatural, death/ pain/ blood, and psychological issues to enhance the reader’s reaction. Miss peregrine’s home for Peculiar Children and The Raven contain the gothic element of supernatural to enhance the fiction of the stories. There are lots of examples of this element in the novel by Riggs. For example, when the monster kills Abe Riggs uses lots of graphic details to really intensify the slow painful death. “Then I saw the gashes in his midsection and nearly fainted” (Riggs 35). “With that he sank back, spent and fading” (Riggs 371). In The Masque of the Red Death Poe ties the element into help create the image of the red death coming in and killing the people who for so long tried to escape death. “ His vesture was dabbled in blood- and his broad brow, with all the features of his face, besprinkled with the scarlet horror” (Poe 451). Jacob starts to go insane from the horrific death of his grandfather and the fact that no one believes him. His parents begin to worry and take action to fix him. “ Eventually my parents did take me to a brain shrinker… I didn’t put up a fight. I knew I needed help” (Riggs 43). The author utilizes this element to help the reader understand the mind tormenting feeling of no one believing you. “God only knows the state you’d be in right now if we hadn’t found him. You’re right dad. Dr. Golan did help me” (Riggs 179). In Poe’s short story the main character goes insane from his guilt of killing a cat. “It was now, I say, the image of a hideous—of a ghastly thing—of the gallows” (Poe 3).
