Application layer – A port is assigned to an application for direct routing of incoming and or outgoing data.
Network layer – IP addresses are assigned to each individual computer. The IP addresses can change and are often assigned by the DHCP server.
Data link layer – Mac Addresses are used to identify which hardware is the sender and which is the receiver. All hardware items have a MAC address. For example: a switch, a computer, and a hub would all have their own MAC address and that address is permanent to each individual device.
2. (5 points) How is TCP different from UDP?
TCP – Using TCP a computer will send packets to a website and in return the …show more content…
3. (5 points) What is a subnet and why do networks need them?
Having a subnet allows to break a large network into smaller networks for the purpose of sending and receiving data. This process is useful for larger networks and is also helpful for security reasons. This can allow for faster data transmission.
4. (5 points) What is a subnet mask?
A subnet mask determines if the IP address is local to that subnet or not.
5. (5 points) How does dynamic addressing work?
Dynamic addressing allows the IP address to change. So, when you turn on your computer the DHCP will send out a request to a DHCP server. The DHCP server will then respond with an IP address that your computer will utilize for that session.
6. (5 points) What benefits and problems does dynamic addressing provide?
The most important benefit of using a dynamic IP address is that it will be much harder for someone to gain access. However, a major problem would be the IP address changing frequently, as this would be …show more content…
So if you have several computers on a subnet you can prioritize the applications as well as the devices.
9. (5 points) How does HTTP use TCP and DNS use UDP?
The computer will open a HTTP session by opening a TCP connection to the HTTP server. The computer will then send a request to the server, the server responds and sends the data to the HTTP server. uses only one TCP connection from client to server there is no TCP connection from server to client. The default port for HTTP is TCP. HTTP prefers a reliable transfer instead of speed which is why it uses TCP. DNS uses UDP which is a faster way of getting the packets but not as reliable.
10. (10 points) How does static routing differ from dynamic routing? When would you use static routing? When would you use dynamic routing?
When using a static router, the address needs to be manually entered and will not change until it is manually changed. This is a good option for a small network as it allows more control and is more secure. Dynamic routing can take a different route and allow for the IP address to be changed without user interference. There is little to no intervention after initially setup. If the path is damaged the router will find an alternate route. This is a good option for large
