1. (5 points) Compare and contrast the three types of addresses used in a network.

Application layer – A port is assigned to an application for direct routing of incoming and or outgoing data.

Network layer – IP addresses are assigned to each individual computer. The IP addresses can change and are often assigned by the DHCP server.

Data link layer – Mac Addresses are used to identify which hardware is the sender and which is the receiver. All hardware items have a MAC address. For example: a switch, a computer, and a hub would all have their own MAC address and that address is permanent to each individual device.

Having a subnet allows to break a large network into smaller networks for the purpose of sending and receiving data. This process is useful for larger networks and is also helpful for security reasons. This can allow for faster data transmission.

A subnet mask determines if the IP address is local to that subnet or not.

Dynamic addressing allows the IP address to change. So, when you turn on your computer the DHCP will send out a request to a DHCP server. The DHCP server will then respond with an IP address that your computer will utilize for that session.

The computer will open a HTTP session by opening a TCP connection to the HTTP server. The default port for HTTP is TCP. HTTP prefers a reliable transfer instead of speed which is why it uses TCP. DNS uses UDP which is a faster way of getting the packets but not as reliable.

When using a static router, the address needs to be manually entered and will not change until it is manually changed. This is a good option for a small network as it allows more control and is more secure. Dynamic routing can take a different route and allow for the IP address to be changed without user interference. There is little to no intervention after initially setup.
