The purpose for Fredrick Douglas and Jourdan Anderson both is to get their point across to the reader so they understand and in both of their letters they do. In both letters from Douglas and Anderson use tone completely different. Douglas tone tends to come off in a more calm yet joyous tone throughout the whole letter “I propose to celebrate this 11th anniversary of my escape from your dominion, by addressing to you a friendly epistle on the subject of slavery” as Douglas stated he was being friendly and also stated his letter with celebrating, his tone just shows how his emotion is kind and throughout the letter there is not even a hint of malicious behavior. Although they’re reaching out to the masters you can tell they are reaching out to a wider audience. “Publicly identify yourself” Douglas did not only want this letter to be known to be personal but wanted for the slave master to put himself out and put pressure on him to rise to the challenge which was given to him by showing himself for who really was. He also wanted to show how they can be friendly and civil as well as the fact that it will become know and spread all over showing a change happening.
