Colon cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the U.S (National Cancer Institute, ND), and every year 4,000 to 5,000 adults in the U.S are diagnosed with a Gastrointestinal tumor (Cancer.Net, 2014). Gastrointestinal cancer refers to cancers that typically affect the digestive system (GI Cancer Institute, 2012). This incorporates cancers of the oesophagus, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, stomach, small intestine, bowel, and anus (GI Cancer Institute, 2012). Gastrointestinal cancer can be located in the upper digestive tract or the lower digestive tract (Wikimedia Foundation, 2015); specifically, cancers in the upper digestive tract include: esophageal, stomach, pancreatic, liver, gallbladder, and cancers of the lower digestive tract are: anal, and colorectal which consists of rectum and colon cancer. (Wikimedia Foundation, 2015). Considering this there are different risk factors and behaviors that affect the possibility of developing Colon cancer; however, there are multiple diagnostic tests and treatments available for affected individuals. Colon cancer is a type of Gastrointestinal cancer found in the lower part of the digestive system with in the large intestine (Wikimedia Foundation, 2015). Generally, Colon cancer starts as polyps that can grow to form cancers. (Mayo Clinic, 2013). Polyps usually are embedded within the wall of the colon (shown in figure 1).
