In the short story “Circus in Town” the author writes “there was a sudden dilation of life within her, of the world around her - an elephant, a brass band in red coats - and to recapture the moment was all she wanted, to scale the glamour and wonder of it, slowly exquisitely, to feel herself unfurl.” demonstrating how the young girl created her own circus using her imagination instead of sulking about the fact that she can’t go to the real one. The story shows how despite not having money to attend the circus, the girl still created her own happiness and didn’t let that bring down her spirit. The author writes “she had her circus - the splendid, matchless circus of a little girl who had never seen one.” and “All night long she wore her purple tights and went riding Billie round the pasture in them.” also proving the previous point. Similarly, the character in “‘Happyness’ for Sale.” also created his own contentment by having an optimistic outlook on life. The author writes that, despite the previously mentioned difficulties he went through, “Within five years he had opened his own institutional brokerage firm in Chicago - which is still thriving today.” that line exhibits how through staying positive and working hard to achieve a goal without letting distractions bring a person down, a desired goal can finally be achieved. The writer again tries to accentuate on the success the character achieved through staying optimistic by writing “The brokerage firm, with assets of $475,326” and “Gardner eventually got his Ferrari but these days drives a jet-black Bentley.” These lines are establishing the accomplishments that Chris achieved, showing the stark contrast between where he lived and the harsh conditions he had to endure and the splendid life he now pursues, all due to the positive outlook he always
