In this phase, puberty begins which leads to sexual maturity and the adolescent becomes more goal orientated as he or she prepares for college or a future after high school. In the final phase of development, the emerging adulthood phase, young people explore new areas of life including college, career, and family choices.

According to Infants, Children, and Adolescents, even though each child is uniquely different, nature also made humans similar for survival (Berk). The cells in the human body contain 23 pairs of chromosomes that were obtained from each parent at conception. The X-chromosomes are found in females and look identical, while a male’s sperm contain both an X and Y chromosome. The sex of the baby is determined by the father’s sperm and the chances of multiple births are increased with fertility drugs. A child’s physical and psychological characteristics are determined by the mother and the father, and a solid, healthy environment is very important in the successful upbringing of a child. The better the mother and father care for themselves during conception and pregnancy, the better the chance for the baby to be born healthy and strong. If the parents neglect the responsibilities of caring for a child, the consequences can be devastating even while still in the womb.
