Cancer is a word that no one wants to hear or think about, however there are many people that are faced with this life changing disease every day. Cancer may be prevented if caught early. Between 2010 and 2020, we expect the number of new cancer cases in the United States to go up about 24% in men to more than 1 million cases per year, and by about 21% in women to more than 900,000 cases per year. To start off, I will explain what cancer is. Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells divide uncontrollably and destroy body tissue. Normal cells usually grow and divide to replace old or dead cells. Cancer cells continue to grow and divide. Cancer cells accumulate in one place. Cells are the building blocks of the human body and all living things, and are characterized by their ability to reproduce themselves. They do so by dividing; thus, one cell becomes two, two become four, etc. Tumors destroy body cells. There are two types of cancer tumors, benign and malignant.
A benign tumor is a mass of cells that lacks the ability to invade neighboring tissue or metastasize. Benign tumors are typically slow-growing and rarely spread to other areas of the body. They often have well-defined borders, so surgical removal can be an effective treatment. These characteristics are required for a tumor to be defined as cancerous and therefore benign tumors are non-cancerous.
