Cancer is a disease that is caused by abnormal cells in a part of someone’s body. Anyone can be diagnosed with cancer, it is not something that only affects certain people. Sometimes the cancer can be hereditary meaning that a family member has had the same type of cancer in the past. However, one of the most common cancers for women is breast cancer. Breast cancer is a cancer that is well known since there is a month that is dedicated to bring awareness to breast cancer but not many people realize how high or low their risk for developing breast cancer is. Breast cancer affects many women, “in the United States, about one woman in eight will develop breast cancer”(Breastcancer.org). Most of the time breast cancer will affect women that are older the forty-five because the rates increase when aging, there is a small percentage of women developing breast cancer under the age of thirty-five. A man can also develop breast cancer but the probability of that happening is unlikely. Every type of disease has risk factors that one can lower or increase but there are also risk factors that one can not control. An example of a risk that one can not control is your gender, both men and women are at risk for developing breast cancer but because women’s breast cells are constantly changing and growing due to the female hormones estrogen and progesterone”(Breastcancer.org).
