Blood Disorders Blood is a vital substance of the body and is needed by the body to live, and when it is not carrying out its part it can cause disorders. Blood disorders can affect one’s health in many different ways, and it can also have a big impact on everyday life. There are many ways to help prevent blood disorders with the knowledge of the different symptoms, lifestyle factors, and knowing family history. Each person described in the scenarios has a different blood disorder caused by different factors. This paper will explain the blood disorders, identify the cause, and discuss methods for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Scenario Two In this scenario Markus a five year old boy is at his pediatrician getting a physical when the mom asks the nurse to check him for sickle cell anemia. Since she has the trait she wants her son to be tested to see if he is also a carrier or if he has the disease. Sickle cell anemia is a genetic blood disorder and can be passed on from parents to child. This blood disorder is caused by a person’s hemoglobin carrying less oxygen than normal, and because of this it causes the red blood cell to be weak and sickle shaped instead of circular. “Under normal circumstances, your body makes healthy hemoglobin known as hemoglobin A. People with sickle cell anemia make hemoglobin S — the S stands for sickle” (Mayo Clinic, 2010). These sickle shaped blood cells can build up and cause clots in blood vessels which can become very painful. The doctor can diagnosis this blood disorder by doing a blood test and checking the amount of abnormal hemoglobin, and this can determine if the patient is a carrier of the sickle cell trait or they have the disease. There is no cure for sickle cell anemia, but it can be treated under the care of a physician. Some treatment options for this blood disorder include a blood transfusion, pain medication, anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics, and oxygen. There is no way to prevent
