Violence was implemented into the social and political party doctrine of the Fascist party. In the doctrine of Fascism Mussolini mentions, that violence is for the strong, it is a way of life and that the idea of peace and happiness is a terrible concept for someone to live by. In the Fascist document Mussolini states, “Fascism requires an active man, one engaged in activity with all his energies: it desires a man virilely conscious of the difficulties that exist in action and ready to face them” (Stone 2013, 78). In other words, Mussolini believes that a Fascist government is not for the weak, it belongs to those that are strong enough to challenge their opponent through violent actions. Mussolini assert, “Fascism, in short, is not only the giver of laws and the founder of institutions, but the educator and promoter of spiritual life. It wants to remake, not the forms of human life, but its content, man, character, faith. And to this end it requires discipline and authority that can enter into the spirit of men” (Stone 2013, 81). Admittedly, Mussolini only wanted the best for Italians granted his goal was to become a powerful leader who encouraged violence and despised weakness. He declared war against socialism and he encouraged citizens to fight against the backwardness of the government. Mussolini implanted fascist ideals into the minds of the Italians. That is, if they want to rid of the current administration only violent actions can do that. With that being said, Mussolini starts to rely on the actions of the Fascist squad. In the diary of Italo Balbo Squadrismo, 1922 a powerful local Fascist leader, the readers were able to witness through his writings the violence that the Fascist regime was capable. In the diary he writes, “ I then announced to the chief of the police that I would burn down and destroyed the houses of all Socialist in Ravenna if he did not give me within half an hour the means required for transporting the Fascists elsewhere… We went through all the towns and centers in the provinces of Forli and Ravenna, destroyed, and burned all the Red buildings… It was a terrible night. Our passage was mark by huge columns of fire and smoke” (Stone 2013, 52). Balbo and his men destroyed Forli and Ravenna; they destroyed anything that was associated with the Socialist party. They killed people, burned down homes, meeting halls, etc.
