Are There Any Good Men Out There?
“A Good Man is Hard to Find”, written by Flannery O’ Connor is the one to read. This story is very interesting but a bit rare. The view point of this story is very different from what some may think. While reading this story I noticed three literary devices being used. This story may contain more than three literary terms but the three I noticed being used were an allegory, allusion, and irony.
The first literary device I noticed being used was an allegory. An allegory is a story in which the characters and events are symbols that stand for ideas about human life or for a political or historical situation. The reason I say this because as I read the story it portrayed a normal family who was heading out on a family vacation to Florida. The grandmother had read about a man called The Misfit being on the loose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida. She did not want to go after reading about the ex-convict but her son Bailey insisted that they go. The grandmother turned to the children mother and said “the children have been to Florida before you all should take them somewhere else for a change so they would see different parts of the world and be broad. They never been to east Tennessee” (O’Connor 352). On their journey to Florida they decide to drive through Georgia and then the grandmother remembered a house that had a secret panel and she wanted to take the children to go see it.
